Mike Parker, our Middle East Director, explains
why MECO Media has closed.
(Featured in Issue 1, 2008 edition of our Magazine)

In previous editions of this magazine we have let you know of various transitions within MECO particularly relating to leadership and finance. Now the latest change affects our media operation, which has been steadily distributing Bibles, books, videos, CDs and DVDs for many years.

After a long and fruitful history of providing resources to people, not only in the Middle East but also around the world, we’ve had to re-evaluate our role in this ministry. As a result Media Cyprus ceased trading at the end of 2007, and we are now working to clear our stock and help customers find new ways of obtaining literature.

We’ve given way because our work had become redundant. There’s been an explosion of publishing in the region, with particular energy in Egypt. Both classic and new titles are pouring off the presses. Bible Societies are working flat out to produce both traditional and contemporary translations, with some red-letter editions explaining Christian words and concepts for Muslim readers, and distribution is now much easier from within the region.

Other platforms and people are rapidly emerging. Talking heads are out, interactive programming in. Video is now DVD, and ever-hungry satellites are key in reaching the region. Add web browsing and ordering, Internet chat and streaming radio, and literature distribution looks very different. It’s great to see these new media used for gospel proclamation and response.

Letting go hasn’t been easy
Coming to the point of letting go has been tough, especially for colleagues who’ve worked hard in this area for many years. We give deep and heartfelt thanks for the ministry of Bob, Sonia, John and Meg here in Cyprus; for Barry, Keith and Kathy, Phil, Aleta, Loris and Hanna before them; and for the many workers and volunteers who’ve served over the years.

It’s a good example of transition in mission. Our “Prodigal” production set a new standard in content and quality. Dubbing is now complete, and it’s available in Arabic, Farsi and English. As times change and as national networks grow and develop, they are taking on from us, and taking the lead in serving people in the region.

After a hundred years, beginning with the evangelistic and apologetic publications of the Nile Mission Press and the Arabic Literature Mission, we remain committed to Christian literature and making God’s word known by every means available. We’ve started conversations with publishers, old and new, to see how our commitment to literature should look in the 21st century. We’re looking for skilled and gifted media people to work with national agencies and networks. We’re on the lookout to connect Christian publishers in the Middle East with supporters elsewhere to sponsor titles, underwrite translators and support Arabic writers.

Methods may change, but the work continues. Will you stand with us as we look forward with excitement to what the next hundred years will bring?
